Vaginoplasty
Vaginoplasty
What is Vagınoplasty ?
The vagina is a genital organ. It is also a transfer organ (birth, menstrual bleeding). Contrary to popular belief, there are no sebaceous and sweat glands in the vagina. Vaginal lubrication triggered by sexual stimulation is provided through the surrounding glands and the enlargement of the vaginal blood vessels (venous congestion).
The vagina is basically a canal composed of muscle and connective tissue. Although it is 8-10 cm in length on average, it has a great stretching and extending capacity, which enables it to tolerate any size of penis during intercourse, and allows for easy delivery of a baby during childbirth. Some hormones secreted during sexual intercourse further increase this stretching capacity.
Vaginoplasty is performed to tighten a woman’s vagina after pregnancy or the aging process. Excess lining is removed from the area, which contracts the vaginal tissues and muscles for a more youthful look and feel. In general, the more children a woman bears, the more stretched out her intimate region will become. In addition to cosmetic concerns, a woman may struggle with a loss of sexual pleasure due to decreased vaginal friction. While Kegel exercises may lead to slight improvements, they are rarely enough to restore satisfaction and quality of life. Only vaginoplasty can produce the dramatic changes most clients seek.
Why would I need a vaginoplasty after childbirth?
You might find that after having children, the stretching of your vaginal canal during birth causes permanent damage. Although the design of your vagina means it can open up to allow a baby out, excessive stretching might mean your muscles aren’t able to return to their former tightness.
The separation of muscles in the walls of your vagina and general stretching of the tissues could be severe enough to mean you can’t stop a tampon from falling out, for example.
Vaginal laxity can also have a serious impact on your sex life. It can be hard to enjoy sex, which can lead to problems with your self-esteem and significantly impact on your relationship.
How Is Vaginoplasty Performed?
During the vaginoplasty procedure, your surgeon will remove any excess skin from the vagina area and stitch loose muscles back together. Ultimately, this will result in a tighter vaginal canal.
A vaginoplasty doesn’t commonly involve any alterations to the labia, but some women choose to get a labiaplasty at the same time. Labiaplasty is performed to reduce the size or reshape the appearance of the labia minora.Patients with mild laxity of their vaginal canal might want to consider a non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatment instead. During your consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will determine which treatment type is best for your situation. The vaginoplasty procedure usually takes 1-2 hours to complete under general or local anesthesia.
What Is My Vaginoplasty Recovery Like?
Patients should have a ride home from the treatment center post-surgery. After a vaginoplasty, patients should expect to experience some pain, swelling, and tenderness. You will be offered prescription pain medication to help with pain management.
Most individuals find they can return to (non-physical) work within three to five days. If your job is physical and strenuous, you may have to wait slightly longer.
During recovery, patients will need to:
Follow the plastic surgeon’s post-op instructions carefully
Come to all scheduled checkups
Reach out to their surgeon if any concerns or questions come up
Patients will need to refrain from sexual activity for at least six weeks after their vaginoplasty. Additionally, individuals can’t use anything that needs to be inserted into the vagina for six weeks. This includes items such as tampons and menstrual cups.

Recovery After Vaginoplasty
Vaginoplasty recovery is similar to recovering from an episiotomy performed during a vaginal birth. You’ll experience some pain, swelling, and tenderness that can be managed with prescription pain medications. Typically, patients can return to an office job within 3 to 5 days. If your job requires strenuous labor, you’ll want to wait a bit longer.
During your recovery, you should:
Follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions closely
Come to all of your scheduled checkups
Call us if you have any questions or concerns
You should refrain from any sexual activity for at least 6 weeks. You will also not be able to use a tampon, menstrual cup, or anything that needs to be inserted into the vagina for the same time period.
What Results Can I Expect From Vaginoplasty?
Your vagina will feel tighter as soon as your healing process ends. Women typically report a high satisfaction rating with vaginoplasty procedures. Following vaginoplasty, many women feel more confident in themselves, are more comfortable wearing tampons, and experience increased pleasure during sexual activity.
