WHAT IS A BLEPHAROPLASTY ?

Unwanted signs of aging on your face include the changes in the appearance of your eyes such as fine wrinkles, saggy skin, a descending eyebrow, excess skin, or a combination of any of these.A blepharoplasty, or eye lift, is a surgical procedure that makes the eyes look more refreshed, awake, large, and youthful. A blepharoplasty can address the upper eyelid (just below the eyebrow), the lower eyelid (the part that looks puffy when you have bags under your eyes), or both. Blepharoplasty is one of the top five most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in Turkey

WHAT EXACTLY DOES A BLEPHAROPLASTY FIX ?

A blepharoplasty can fix any or all of the following problems:
tired looking eyes
drooping eyelids
thin, crepe-y or crepe-paper skin of the eyelids
dark circles under the eyes
puffy bags under the eyes
deep tear troughs
hooding of the eyelids
Asian eyelids that lack the upper lid crease
prominent crows feet

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Determining your candidacy for any surgery requires an in-person consultation with Dr. Sever, which will include an examination of your eyes and face, as well as a review of your medical history and specific concerns. In general, healthy patients without major ophthalmologic issues are the best candidates for surgery.

If you have recently had lasik, cataract surgery, or another ophthalmologic procedure, you must wait 6 months before having a blepharoplasty. If you have dry, itchy eyes, it is likely that you will continue to have dry eyes after surgery. If you have a face with a negative vector (slanted on profile), loose eyelid skin, or lax tissue, you may require an adjuctive maneuver such as a lateral canthopexy or canthoplasty. Fat grafting and fat repositioning may also be performed.

Lower Blepharoplasty

While special creams and serums help reduce the look of puffy, tired eyes, a lower eyelid procedure is the best remedy to alleviate persistent under-eye bags. By making a small incision below the lower lashes or inside the lower eyelid, the excess fat, skin, and water that has accumulated under the eyes through the years are removed, and the skin is tightened. The goal of lower blepharoplasty is to restore the smoothness, tone, and tautness of your eyes, giving them a youthful, healthy appearance.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is commonly referred to as an “eye lift.” This surgery is performed to remove the extra skin, fat, and loose muscle that weighs down the upper eyelids, causing them to droop. While some of the fat will be redistributed to allow the eyelids to retain their natural look, the majority of the excess fat and skin is removed. The remaining skin is then tightened to give the eyes a more alert appearance. Very fine sutures are used to eliminate the visibility of scarring.

WHAT IS THE SURGERY LIKE?

All scars are either hidden inside the pink part of the eyelids or camouflaged along a skin crease. When you wake up, we will place an ice pack over your eyes for several minutes.

IS BLEPHAROPLASTY PAINFUL?

Although eyelid surgery requires incisions on a very sensitive part of the face, the procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and, best of all, not painful. Typically, Dr. Sever performs blepharoplasties using local anesthesia, a series of numbing injections that minimize sensation in and around the surgical area.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE?

After surgery, you will be able to go home the same day, once you are feeling well. You may wear your eyeglasses immediately, but contacts should not be used for the first several days, while swelling subsides.

You may go about your normal activities, such as shopping, walking, reading, and even working 1-2 days after surgery. However, swelling and bruising typically do not go away for at least one week. Many patients like to wear sunglasses for the first few days after surgery, to camouflage this. Once your swelling and bruising subsides, you will notice a more refreshed, rested, and youthful appearance around your eyes.

Is Eyelid Surgery Permanent?

While eyelid surgery can be expected to correct certain conditions permanently, you will continue to age naturally. Life-long sun protection will help to maintain your results. Satisfaction with your new image should continue to grow as you recover from surgery. As swelling and bruising subside, the results of eyelid surgery will reveal a smooth, better-defined eyelid and surrounding region and an alert and rejuvenated appearance.

Will Eyelid Surgery Affect My Vision?

Blepharoplasty surgery should not affect your permanent vision. Patients that have obstructed vision due to excess skin find that their vision improved after their eyelid surgery.

When can I go back to wearing contact lenses after my blepharoplasty?

Generally, most individuals refrain from wearing contact lenses for at least 2 weeks.

When can I resume normal activities after a Blepharoplasty

Following eyelid surgery, patients typically can resume normal activities, including work, within 7-10 days. Patients can use smartphones, tablets, computers the next day, i.e. work from home as soon as 24 hours. Contact lenses may be worn after ten days as well, typically. Strength training and intense exercise can commence at 4-6 weeks post-procedure.

I have really dry eyes, am I a good candidate for extensive cosmetic eye surgery?

Individuals who have very dry eyes may have healing issues after surgery. It is important to be cleared by an ophthalmologist or have thorough recommendations on how to keep your eyes moist after surgery. When you see Dr. Sever for your consultation, he will examine your eyes and check to see if you are a good candidate and if it is safe to proceed with surgery.
